On May 16, 2016, GoDataDriven hosted the second PyData Amsterdam Meetup. Speakers included Niels Zeilemaker and Wendell Kuling.

For this second PyData Amsterdam Meetup over 110 people turned up to watch presentations by GoDataDriven’s Niels Zeilemaker and ING Wholesale Banking’s data scientist Wendell Kuling. The Meetup was sponsored by a consortium of Schiphol Group, Microsoft, and GoDataDriven, to introduce the Schiphol Data Science Hackathon that will take place on Friday October 28.

Niels Zeilemaker: Yes you can play Monopoly with a genetic algorithm

The first speaker was Niels Zeilemaker with Yes you can play Monopoly with a genetic algorithm.

Niels Zeilemaker is a Data Hacker at GoDataDriven, where he works for a wide range of companies where he spends his time doing feature engineering and building models. Before joining GoDataDriven, he finished his PhD thesis at the Technical University of Delft.

In this talk Niels explained how to ‘solve’ Monopoly with a genetic algorithm. First he reminded us of the official rules of Monopoly, as nobody seems to actually play according to the rules. Niels then explained how he optimized the general buying rule by using a genetic algorithm, and finally how to optimize the number of houses to buy.

Wendell works as a Data Scientist at ING in the Wholesale Banking Advanced Analytics team. By applying Data Science Wendell’s team provides better services to ING’s corporate customers. Wendell covered several valuable learnings and experiences from projects where ING matches large datasets based on names. This talk included the key algorithms and packages used for name matching, and a best-practice approach in applying these algorithms at scale. Would you bet on a Cruncher (48-CPU/512 MB RAM machine), a Tesla (Cuda Tesla K80 with 4992 cores, 24GB memory) or a Spark cluster (80 cores/2,5 TB memory)?
